Los estudios reunidos en este homenaje a Andrew Watson, autor de una obra tan influyente como «Agricultural Innovation in the Early Islamic World» (1983), giran, por una parte, en torno al impacto de la conquista islámica en la agricultura y la economía de la península Ibérica, sin desatender las cuestiones relativas al intercambio comercial y cultural a través del Mediterráneo y a la acuñación y circulación de la moneda durante la Edad Media. Un segundo bloque de contribuciones se centra en las consecuencias del imperialismo británico desde finales del siglo XVIII al inicio del siglo XX. Se trata de investigaciones que analizan las tendencias del comercio, las reacciones y contrarreacciones al dominio inglés y las transformaciones económicas y sociales que tuvieron lugar en la sociedad norteamericana contemporánea.
