Els estudis reunits en aquest homenatge a Andrew Watson, autor d'una obra tan influent com «Agricultural Innovation in the Early Islamic World» (1983), giren, d'una banda, entorn l'impacte de la conquesta islàmica en l'agricultura i l'economia de la península Ibèrica, sense desatendre les qüestions relatives a l'intercanvi comercial i cultural a través del Mediterrani i a l'encunyació i circulació de la moneda durant l'Edat Mitjana. Un segon bloc de contribucions se centra en les conseqüències de l'imperialisme britànic des de finals del segle XVIII a l'inici del segle XX. Es tracta d'investigacions que analitzen les tendències del comerç, les reaccions i contrarreaccions al domini anglès i les transformacions econòmiques i socials que van tenir lloc en la societat nord-americana contemporània.
