Maria Beneyto (València, 1920–2000) stands as one of the most significant Valencian writers of the 20th century. ‘Learning to Howl’, the English translation of forty-nine poems spanning her work from 1952 to 2003, introduces her remarkable Valencian voice to Anglophone readers. As Professor Candelas Gala observes in her introduction, the title—selected by translator Paul Scott Derrick—captures the very essence of Beneyto’s poetics. For her, “howling” becomes the necessary response to life’s betrayals: those imposed by sociopolitical and historical forces, by the distortions of language itself, and, ultimately, by the impenetrable wall of death.
Maria Beneyto (València, 1920-2000) s’erigeix com una de les escriptores valencianes més significatives del segle XX. ‘Learning to Howl’, la traducció a l’anglès de quaranta-nou poemes que abasten la seua obra des de 1952 fins a 2003, presenta aquesta notable veu valenciana als lectors anglòfons. Com observa la professora Candelas Gala en la introducció, el títol, seleccionat pel traductor Paul Scott Derrick, captura l’essència mateixa de la poètica de Beneyto. Per a ella, l’“udol” es converteix en la resposta necessària a les traïcions de la vida: les imposades per les forces sociopolítiques i històriques, per les distorsions del llenguatge mateix i, en darrera instància, pel mur impenetrable de la mort.
